A 13 -Year-Old Girl Flies Golden Eagle in Mongolia, Infinitely More Bad Ass Than You

I’ve been wanting to write a post about this, but I’ve been really busy lately so I’ll just repost this one. I love that this made world news when it first broke a couple of months ago. The images are simply amazing.

There’s the average 13 year-old, then there’s Ashol-Pan.

That’s right. That’s a 13 year-old girl flying a Golden Eagle in Mongolia. Even in the West, this would be astounding, but in Mongolia, this is huge. For those of you unfamiliar with the wonder and delight that is the world of falconry, come closer to the fireplace. I’m about to break this down for you.

Falconry is an amazing sport and though a nearly extinct sport in the West except for the European aristocracy, medievalists, Dungeon and Dragon followers and yours truly, it is hugely popular in the Middle East and Asia, where the sport originated some 2,000 years ago. In fact, if you fly on some air carriers in the Middle East, they have in-flight accommodations for your falcon.
